Welcome to Museum District

Just west of The Fan sits the Museum District, another of Richmond’s older and more densely developed neighborhoods. You’ll find plenty of historic rowhouses, attached homes, duplexes, condos, and apartments here, with homes generally sitting closer together than they do as you continue west toward the Near West End. It offers many of the things people love about The Fan, but with a slightly more residential feel.

As its name suggests, the neighborhood is home to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and sits alongside the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, but the museums are only part of what makes this area so special. The sprawling lawn and sculpture garden at the VMFA are practically an extension of the neighborhood. Bring a blanket and a picnic, meet friends for a drink, or check the calendar for one of the many events hosted here throughout the year.

The VMFA also happens to be a great place to eat. Best Café is perfect for grabbing something casual to take outside and enjoy on the lawn, while Amuse upstairs is our pick when you want to make more of an occasion out of it with a sit-down meal overlooking the museum grounds. Outside the museum, The Stables at Belmont is a great neighborhood option for a nicer dinner, and Black Hand Coffee is a longtime local stop for coffee.

Carytown sits along the neighborhood’s southern edge and is one of our favorite places in Richmond to shop, eat, or simply wander around. It’s packed with locally owned boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants, and plenty of Richmond personality.

We think the Museum District is particularly appealing to someone who wants the historic architecture, density, and walkability of true city living but likes the idea of being just a touch removed from the activity of The Fan. You can walk to dinner, wander over to the VMFA lawn with a picnic, spend a Saturday shopping in Carytown, and still be only minutes from the neighborhoods farther west.
